At ShapeCUT, were all about providing quality steel profile cutting services – right down to the fine details of metalwork. As one of our services, customers often request bevel cutting or bevelling as part of an order. It can be an overlooked element of steelworks, so here we take a closer look at exactly what bevelling is. It could be the perfect solution for your next steel project.

What is bevelling?

Bevelling is the process of creating an angled sloped edge on a piece of metal. This is formed in preparation for a welding seam and its uses are endless, ranging from minor steel projects such as cabinet creation to major civil infrastructure projects.

The welding shapes that bevelling is purposed for are defined by a series of letters: Y, K, V, and VV. Bevelling can vary in how challenging it is, based on the metal used. While steel, stainless steel and aluminium are commonly used, a bevel may also be required on a more complex piece of metal, such as a curved piece of metal that requires a bevel on an inside diameter. This is an important consideration when addressing the project as a whole. When bevelling multiple pieces together, it’s critical to ensure that each shape configuration is accurate, so that the welding seams smoothly align.

Key bevel cutting considerations

Bevel length

Bevel length is important to ensure two main things: strength and easier downstream operation once welded. When it comes to efficient, high-quality welding, consistency is key.

Angle degree

It’s important to consider the tolerance level when addressing bevel angle. Whatever the application, as long as the angle falls within the tolerance parameters, you’re set for a solid bevel.

Heat

Heat can critically change alloy composition, which creates problems as it alters the structure and strength of the metal. It’s necessary to carefully consider heating processes when planning a bevelling project.
