There’s only one international award for innovative products and ideas that have an impact on steel solutions, and that’s the Swedish Steel Prize. This two-day event is dedicated to hard work, dedication and a curious mindset, giving attendees a deeper understanding of what can be achieved with high-strength steel.

Previous winners have included Kiruna Wagon’s mineral transporter, Ponsse Plc’s forest harvester and the largest dump truck in the world, designed by Belarus.

The 2018 nominees for the Swedish Steel Prize has just been announced, with the winner to be announced on May 24. To showcase the innovation in steel cutting, fabrication and design, let’s take a closer look at what the nominees have achieved.

Multipurpose truck-mounted sky-lift by CTE Spa

CTE Spa

CTE Spa are an Italian based company dedicated to making your working height safer and easier. They do this through their truck mounted platforms, track mounted access platforms, self-propelled platforms, scissor lifts and runabouts and stair climbers.

Great things come in small packages, and that’s certainly the case for CTE Spa’s nominated product. They’ve developed a small multipurpose truck-mounted sky-lift with exceptional versatility, height and reach. Manoeuvring around tight corners and access to confined spaces is made easy thanks to the unique compact boom system which has an elevated slewing mechanism. A well-thought out design is optimised by the boom cross sections and use of high-strength steel.

Lightweight cutter by JAK Metalli Oy

JAK Metalli

Based out of Finland, JAK Metalli Oy are known for their tree shearers for excavators and tractors. Their nominated product is a unique cutting system for the clearing of roadside vegetation, providing a more controlled operation for small trees than conventional chain crushers. Using high-strength and wear-resistant steel from Hardox, JAK Metalli Oy’s light weight cutter allows for better productivity, a safer work environment for operators and incredibly low energy consumption.

Next generation trailer by Mantella S.r.l

Mantella trailer

Mantella is an Italian company specialising in manufacturing components for the transport industry. They build a large range of semitrailers for the Italian market including controlled temperature, quarry yard and polyvalent trailers. Their nominated product is an innovative, lightweight trailer and body combination that’s been made possible by smart production methods, high-strength and wear-resistant steel from Strenx and Hardox.

Versatile grain auger wagon by Trufab Global, Australia

trufab global

Trufab Global is an Australian group, encompassing Grain King and Rhino Bucket products. Their nominated design is a lightweight grain auger wagon that was constructed with no welding. The truck allows for the final assembly to be done on-site and by applying modules, a range of different sizes can be delivered. The team behind this design believe that the new chaser bin lowers costs and increases production efficiency for all users.
