The 10 Biggest Steel Producing Nations

The steel industry continues to reach record highs in worldwide production, despite facing challenges of oversupply and raw materials costs, a report from the World Steel Association shows.

Incredibly, total world crude steel production was 1,606 million metric tonnes for 2013 and estimates show that numbers for 2014 – to be released in the coming months – and into 2015, will show continued growth.

As we wait for the official data for 2014, we thought it would be interesting to take a look at the world’s biggest steel producing nations as they stand. Who are the biggest steel producers? How much do they produce, export and use?

1.    China

Crude Steel Production:           779.0 million tonnes

Steel Exports:                            61.5 million tonnes

Apparent Steel Use:                  700.2 million tonnes

2.    Japan

Crude Steel Production:           110.6 million tonnes

Steel Exports:                            42.5 million tonnes

Apparent Steel Use:                  65.3 million tonnes

3.    United States

Crude Steel Production:           86.9 million tonnes

Steel Exports:                            12.5 million tonnes

4.    India

Crude Steel Production:           81.2 million tonnes
